Head of Payments

  • Remote

Job description

As Head of Payments, you will own and drive our global payments strategy, ensuring our payment infrastructure supports business growth while delivering a seamless, reliable, and cost-effective experience for customers. You will be responsible for optimising payment performance, expanding our payment capabilities, and building the frameworks, processes, and team needed to scale efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the company's payments strategy, aligning payment operations, provider relationships, and infrastructure with broader business objectives and growth plans.

  • Own and continuously optimise our payments ecosystem, including payment service providers (PSPs), digital wallets, card processing, bank transfers, and alternative payment methods.

  • Review and improve payments UI/UX as a product, identifying opportunities to reduce friction, increase conversion, and improve the overall customer payment experience.

  • Optimise payment routing logic and provider performance to maximise approval rates while minimising processing costs across all key markets.

  • Monitor payment performance at a PSP, issuer, and market level, identifying opportunities to improve rates, reduce declines, and increase payment reliability.

  • Define and maintain the optimal provider mix for each market by balancing approval rates, processing fees, settlement structures, reliability, and customer preferences.

  • Lead negotiations with PSPs, financial institutions, and payment partners to secure favourable commercial terms, lower costs, and improved service levels.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce foreign exchange and settlement costs through local acquiring, alternative settlement structures, and provider optimisation.

  • Take ownership of new PSP evaluations and integrations, ensuring successful implementation and ongoing performance management.

  • Drive the payments localisation roadmap, including the rollout of local payment methods, local acquiring solutions, and market-specific optimisations as we expand into new territories.

  • Build and maintain a payments performance framework, providing clear reporting and insights on approval rates, costs, routing effectiveness, provider performance, and overall payment health.

  • Partner closely with Product, Tech, Finance, Operations, and Customer Support teams to deliver payments-related initiatives and improve payment functionality across both customer-facing and backend systems.

  • Assist with strategic initiatives such as Project TrustFlow, leveraging payments expertise to design secure internal payment flows and reduce operational and financial risk exposure.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant payment regulations and industry standards, including oversight of audits and security requirements where applicable.

  • Establish scalable processes, documentation, and operational controls to improve efficiency, reduce key-person dependencies, and support future growth.

  • Act as the company's primary subject matter expert for all payments-related matters, providing guidance and leadership across the organisation.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the payments function, including managing team members, defining clear ownership areas, setting measurable goals, and supporting long-term career development.

Success in this role will be measured through:

  • Increased payment approval and conversion rates across key markets.

  • Reduced payment processing and foreign exchange costs.

  • Improved routing effectiveness, provider performance, and overall payment reliability.

  • Successful launch of new payment methods, PSP integrations, and localisation initiatives.

  • Strong commercial outcomes from provider negotiations and partnerships.

  • Improved visibility through robust payments reporting and performance metrics.

  • Development of a scalable, well-documented payments function with clear ownership and accountability.

  • Growth and development of the payments team, creating a strong foundation for future expansion.
